Forum: Confronting Racism--Unconscious Bias
Sunday, February 10, 2019, 10:15 AM - 11:05 AM
Most people don't think they're biased, but how you see the world depends a lot on where you're standing. Kim D'Abreu, a diversity consultant, will discuss unconscious and implicit bias and provide tools and strategies for dealing with it.
Unconscious biases can be “hard-wired” in a culture, systems and even in faith-based organizations. They can undermine a group's intentions for creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. In this interactive session, attendees will consider how unconscious biases influence perceptions and decision making; explore strategies to mitigate and address bias at the individual and organizational level; and engage in storytelling to be fully present for conversations across dimensions of difference.
D'Abreu is a diversity facilitator and leadership coach. Her expertise includes effectively developing tools, strategies, and collateral resources focused on climate and cultural competencies as a means to promote the success of women, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQI communities, and other marginalized groups. As the daughter of parents who were active in the Civil Rights movement, she grew up seeing activism at work in large and small ways--from protesting on construction sites that failed to hire Black construction crews and contractors and raising funds for student nonviolent coordinating activities in the South to raising children who would stretch into opportunities for higher education and with hearts and minds always focused on giving back via service.
